Burlington Track Finishes Top Six at League Championship; Multiple Programs Inside D2 Tournament Cutoff

Five Burlington programs hold automatic D2 tournament spots, Leila Gilligan shines at the ML Championship, and boys' tennis wraps up the regular season 10–9.

Burlington Track Finishes Top Six at League Championship; Multiple Programs Inside D2 Tournament Cutoff

Burlington hosted the Middlesex League Outdoor Track Championship on Wednesday, with both track programs finishing in the top six. Boys' tennis closed out the regular season with a 5–0 sweep, and the latest MIAA Division 2 power rankings show nearly all Red Devils programs inside the automatic qualifier line.

Track & Field

Burlington's boys scored 55 points to finish sixth in a 12-team field dominated by Lexington (211). Arlington (73) and Melrose (68) finished second and third.

Leon Sekandi was Burlington's standout, placing third in the 110 hurdles (15.12) and adding a fifth in the high jump (6-4) and sixth in the long jump (21-10.50). Ryan Brooks earned second in the javelin at 175-8. Perkins Augustin took third in the shot put (46-10.25). Matthew Conte placed fifth in the 400 hurdles (59.19) and sixth in the 110 hurdles (15.67), Roy Kanyike finished fifth in the 800 (2:03.64), and Steven Dalalelis was sixth in the 200 (23.35). The 4x800 relay came in fifth (8:38.68) and the 4x400 placed fifth as well (3:39.11).

The girls scored 54 points for fifth place behind Lexington (233), Melrose (95), Winchester (78), and Reading (74).

Leila Gilligan was a strong individual performer, placing second in the 400 hurdles (1:07.63) and finishing seventh in the 100 hurdles. Brooke Baglio took third in the 400 (1:02.27) and fifth in the long jump (17-5.50). Cassidy Hanlon earned third in the shot put (35-3) and fourth in the javelin (98-7). The 4x100 relay team came in third (50.95) and the 4x400 placed fourth (4:22.27). Olivia DiRienzo was fourth in the triple jump (35-7).

The boys' tennis team closed out the regular season with a 5–0 win over Central Catholic, finishing 10–9 overall. Girls' tennis dropped a 5–0 match to 12-3 Bedford, falling to 5–12. Despite the record, the Lady Devils rank 24th in the MIAA Division 2 power rankings — inside the 32-team automatic qualifier field. Boys are ranked 15th as of last posting.

Softball fell 20–8 at Haverhill, dropping to 5–12. This after a close 10-11 loss to Stoneham the day before.

Five Burlington programs currently sit inside the 32-team automatic qualifier cutoff in the Division 2 power rankings. Boys' lacrosse is ranked 18th, boys' tennis 15th, girls' lacrosse 26th, and girls' tennis 24th. Boys' volleyball ranks at 15th with a 10-8 record.

Baseball (41st) and softball (46th) are outside the automatic line; teams ranked 33rd and below need a .500 or better record to qualify for a play-in game.
