Local Students Honored at Russian School of Mathematics Annual Ceremony
Burlington-area students recognized for achievement and growth, with emphasis on reasoning, problem-solving, and the kind of critical thinking that prepares them for whatever comes next.
More than 6,000 students, parents, and teachers gathered on June 7 for the Russian School of Mathematics Annual Award Ceremony, celebrating over 1,500 student honorees from Massachusetts and Nashua, New Hampshire. The event recognized achievement in mathematics, academic growth, and participation in national and international competitions. Among the honorees were 14 students from Burlington, recognized for their accomplishments and dedication to learning.

Teaching Kids to Think, Not Just Calculate
The ceremony highlighted not only academic excellence but also the school's broader educational mission of developing reasoning, communication, and problem-solving skills from an early age.
“Mathematics is not only about finding answers, but about learning how to think, how to explain ideas clearly, question assumptions, and approach unfamiliar problems with confidence,” said Inessa Rifkin, RSM co-founder.
The curriculum — which begins at age 4 — emphasizes deep conceptual understanding, logical reasoning, and the ability to articulate thinking out loud. Students aren’t just solving problems; they’re explaining their methods, evaluating multiple approaches, and building what RSM calls “mathematical character.” The school also offers a competition track for students interested in advanced mathematical topics and participation in challenging national and international competitions.
“When students learn to think independently and embrace challenging problems, they gain skills that extend far beyond mathematics,” said Gohar Hakobyan, RSM Regional Director, “and prepare them to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing world.”
A New Local Option for Math Enrichment
Founded in 1997, the Russian School of Mathematics is one of the largest K–12 after-school math enrichment programs in North America, with more than 75 locations serving over 90,000 students across the U.S. and Canada.
