Daily Buzz | School Committee Discusses Out-of-District Placements

Also, lots to be excited about with new food service company

Good morning, Burlington!

I wanted to highlight a couple of conversations from School Committee Friday:

  • Whitson’s, the new food vendor, gave a presentation at around 19:00 about their program. Some exciting components of the program: Smoothie station, pizza station, student involvement in food choices. They emphasized their focus on natural food and getting to know students and their preferences.
  • There was a brief conversation labeled in the agenda as “Rising costs of special education,” during which Superintendent Conti mentioned something that was discussed a few months ago: special education costs are going up. The state has mandated a 14% increase in tuition for out-of-district placement during the next fiscal year, and it is increasingly difficult to hire staff (both within districts and at outside organizations) that is qualified to help children with the most significant learning and mental health needs. The Committee reassured the audience that all children’s needs would continue being met, and the reason for this conversion was because our accommodated budget (from where we pay for our special education program) will be affected by these increases. The 2/28 School Committee meeting will start in executive session (to preserve anonymity because they’ll be discussing some specific situation) and they will participate in a specific presentation about this topic.
