Indoor Track Sweeps Stoneham, Winter Teams Push Through a Busy Stretch

Burlington winter teams continued a busy run last week, including a dominant showing from indoor track and competitive efforts across basketball, wrestling, and hockey.

At the Boston University Track & Tennis Center, indoor track delivered a clean sweep against Stoneham. The boys earned a 79–21 victory, while the girls followed with a 75–24 win, continuing a strong early-season trend for both squads.

On the court Friday night, basketball teams were tested in Wilmington. The girls dropped a heartbreaker, 45–43, in a tightly contested game that stayed neck-and-neck until the final seconds. Sicari led Burlington with 14 points and six steals, while Ortiz added 11 points, three steals, and a key charge late in the game. The boys bounced back with a 62–52 road win, led by M. Gray’s 19 points and Poehler’s 17. Ellis knocked down three timely triples as the Devils improved to 6–2 overall and 5–1 in league play.

Wrestling had a split weekend on two fronts. Sophomore captains Shvartsman and Bonnell competed at the Eastern States Classic in New York, with Shvartsman reaching the quarterfinals before falling in the consolation round, and Bonnell dropping two close matches. Burlington finished 112th out of 181 teams. Meanwhile, at the Weymouth Invitational, Tonani placed third, Abreu and McElroy finished fifth, and Leavitt took sixth as the Devils placed 12th overall out of 15 teams.

On the ice Saturday, boys’ hockey earned a 3–1 win over Wakefield behind goals from McElroy, Ulmschneider, and Tulipano, with MacLeod stopping 23 shots. Girls’ hockey fell 5–2 to Wakefield/Wilmington, getting goals from Scanlon—her first career tally—and Cicolini.
