Letter to the Editor: Speed Tables Available to Calm Traffic on Local Streets

OUR EDITORIAL POLICY

Dear Editor,

Thanks to the Buzz for publicizing the Town’s new speed table policy.

I and two other residents of Fox Hill Road (Katrina Boschetti and Melissa Ulliani) worked with the Town’s Traffic Committee to create a formal Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and to shepherd it through Select Board approval. With the SOP in hand, our small group tested the new process by following the SOP requirements and presenting an application to the Select Board. It was approved and now awaits Select Board submittal to Town Meeting for final funding.

It is important to note that this SOP offers an avenue for ANY qualifying Burlington street to apply for speed table installation, not just Fox Hill Road. (Qualifying streets are defined in the SOP.)

Neighboring streets such as Donald Road and Westwood Street have complained for years that the speed bumps on Fox Hill Road encourage cut-through traffic on their quiet residential streets. This SOP now offers those streets a solution as well as any other street in town that would like similar traffic-calming measures. A successful application takes a little leg-work but we have shown that it can be done! Here is the link to the SOP on the Town’s website.
