Sh;ft Offers Neurodivergent-Friendly Yoga Classes
Active individuals looking for a sensory-friendly experience can participate in weekly yoga classes in partnership with Voice Colors Yoga.
Sh;ft Studio, founded by Burlington resident Kris Fabbri, has partnered with Voice Colors Yoga to offer a weekly specialized yoga class as a permanent part of their schedule. The class is specifically designed to support individuals on the autism spectrum and others who identify as neurodivergent.
"Someone who has autism might not feel comfortable just going right into a regular power yoga or heated yoga class," said Fabbri. "They might get overwhelmed. They may not understand what the instructor saying and they may not feel comfortable asking for any sort of modifications or extra support." This class is designed to address these unique needs.
Rather than relying strictly on voice cueing, the classes use use color-coded visuals, laminated exercise sheets, and a TV monitor to provide clear, predictable guidance. The classroom environment is also adapted to avoid overstimulation, featuring low lighting, soft sound, and gentle instruction.
A detailed intake and consent form (completed with a caregiver, if necessary) helps tailor each participant’s experience, including preferences about physical touch or hands-on corrections.
Classes are led by a certified Voice Colors Yoga instructor and a parent of a child with autism, who brings both expertise and personal passion to the program.
The goal of this class, as with all programs at Sh;ft, says Fabbri, is to create a safe, welcoming space for joyful movement and connection. Whether participants progress to more advanced classes or simply use this as a calming, inclusive space, the focus is on accessibility, autonomy, and acceptance.
Classes are available for tweens & teens ages 10-15 on Saturdays from 11:30-12:15, and for ages 16-adult on Saturdays from 12:30-1:30.
This class is still in its early stages, but Fabbri hopes to grow the program and continue making yoga more inclusive and supportive for all bodies and minds.
