Fresh, Free, and Local: Council on Aging’s Summer Produce Program Brings Nutrition and Community Together
Each summer the Burlington Council on Aging and Lahey Hospital & Medical Center come together to provide fresh, local produce to dozens of older adults in the community—at no cost to them.
While in years past the program has had a more traditional market-style setup at Lahey, the produce is now distributed in pre-packed bags that can be picked up right at the COA. This change, sparked by concerns for hygiene, has proven to be more efficient and welcoming for participants, said Director, Marge Yetman.
Last summer the program served over 150 people, many of whom received produce every three weeks – more frequently for those with the greatest need.
Each produce bag includes a recipe card to inspire creativity and make unfamiliar items less intimidating. “You might not know what to do with eggplant,” joked Activities Coordinator Maria Teager, “but put it in a sauce with garlic and throw that over rice, and it’s delicious.”
It’s not just about nutrition—this program fosters community, promotes healthy habits, and helps older residents discover new foods and recipes in a supportive, accessible way.
Sign-ups for the 2025 program are underway. All seniors are encouraged to enjoy the benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables all summer long. Call the COA at 781-270-1950 to get your name on the list by Tuesday, June 17.
