Successes in the Pool and on the Ice Highlight Busy Week for Burlington Athletics
Burlington swim battled through two close meets, hockey delivered comeback and overtime drama, and wrestling fought tough league competition.
Burlington athletes were tested across multiple fronts this week, with close finishes, record-breaking swims, and gritty efforts defining another active stretch of the winter season.
Boys’ swimming opened the week with a hard-fought 91–76 win over Stoneham/Melrose, a meet that came down to the final events. Captains Woodbury and Ruiz, along with Cullen, delivered key first-place finishes, while Costa and Fitzgerald continued impressive streaks of dropping multiple seconds in their events. Turnquist debuted in the 200 Free, and Floyd added valuable points with multiple top-three finishes.
On Thursday, Burlington fell 53–40 to Arlington, but the meet produced a major highlight as the 200 Medley Relay of Alba, Woodbury, Ruiz, and Floyd broke the school record with a 1:51.19. Several swimmers logged personal bests, highlighting the team's steady progress.
On the ice, boys’ hockey dropped a tough 2–1 match to Woburn in overtime, with Ulmschneider scoring and MacLeod stopping 25 shots in a strong effort. The girls delivered one of the week’s signature moments, rallying from a 2–0 deficit to defeat Masconomet 4–2. Costa netted her first career goal, Kocur added a momentum-shifting tally, and Cleary scored twice to power the comeback.
Wrestling rounded out the week with a 45–25 loss to Woburn, highlighted by pins from Shvartsman, Ho, and Tonani, plus bonus-point wins from Leavitt and Bonnell. Despite the setback, the Red Devils showed resilience against tough opposition as the season continues.
