Red Devils Stay Busy Over Break With Tournament Titles, Big Wins, and Wrestling Surge
Burlington teams stayed sharp over winter break, with strong performances across the board.
While the game calendar was lighter over winter break, Burlington teams made the most of their opportunities, turning in strong performances across multiple sports.
Wrestling
The Red Devils were especially active — and successful — on the mats, with a busy run led by the Lowell Holiday Tournament. Shvartsman became the third Red Devils sophomore to make it to the finals in this prestigious tourney with five straight wins, before falling in a 2-0 heartbreaker. Bonnell, Tonani, and Leavitt each won 3 matches, and Abreu and Im won 2.
Burlington then hosted a quad meet on December 23 where they went 1-2, with Shvartsman and Abreu each finishing 3–0. Four days later, the Red Devils delivered a standout performance, sweeping a quad in Lexington for the first time in many years with wins over Billerica, Lexington, and Gloucester. Shvartsman, Abreu, Bonnell, Leavitt, Tonani, and McElroy all played key roles. Burlington capped the break with a 1–2 showing at a New Year’s Eve quad. But they didn't stop there – if anything, the team came back after New Year's looking better than ever, beating Wilmington 58-20 on Friday and sweeping Reading, Stoughton, and Bedford/Acton Boxborough at a home quad meet on Saturday. This weekend's victories push the team’s record to 11–6.
Girls' Basketball
The Lady Devils closed the year on a high note. Burlington defeated Bedford 55–42 behind a career night from Reilly, then captured the Tony Romano Tournament championship with a thrilling 33–32 win over Tewksbury. Ochi led the title game with a double-double as Burlington improved to 4–2.
Boys' Basketball
Burlington cruised past Bedford 85–51 in the opening round of the Romano Tournament before falling in overtime to Tewksbury in the championship game. M. Gray, J. Gray, and Poehler fueled a strong holiday stretch, leaving the Red Devils at 4–2.
Hockey
The boys' hockey team picked up quality wins over Stoneham (5–3), Westford Academy (2–1), and Watertown/Wayland (10-3) with balanced scoring throughout the lineup, including career first goals for Tirabassi and Currier. Girls' hockey also impressed, earning a gritty 3–2 non-league victory over Leominster behind a standout effort from the Kocur–Cleary line and strong goaltending from Brindle. They lost a tough match on Saturday, falling 4-1 to Winthrop, but will be back on the ice with more non-league play against Central Catholic on Monday.
Indoor Track
Both indoor track teams had a strong showing Wilmington, as the boys earned a 57–43 win and the girls edged out a tight 51–49 victory.
With winter sports now back in full swing, Burlington enters the new year carrying momentum across multiple programs.
