Boys' Volleyball Clinches Tournament Berth as Burlington Varsity Teams Go 5–3 Over Four-Day Stretch
Baseball topped Wilmington, both tennis programs swept Stoneham, and the Red Devils weathered losses in lacrosse and softball over a busy weekend run.
Burlington's boys' volleyball team secured a spot in the postseason with their 10th win of the year Monday, capping a stretch that also saw baseball, boys' tennis, and girls' tennis all pick up wins. The Red Devils went 5–3 from Friday through Monday.
On Friday, boys' baseball beat Wilmington 7–2 at home to improve to 9–8. Boys' volleyball topped Woburn 3–2 at home, improving to 9–8. Girls' varsity softball was shut out 12–0 at Wilmington, falling to 5–11, while the JV team brought a 16-4 win over the Wildcats.
Saturday brought a pair of losses. Boys' lacrosse dropped a home matchup against Beverly 12–9, falling to 9–7. Girls' tennis lost to Wilmington 5–0 at home, dropping to 4–11.
Both tennis programs bounced back Monday with 5–0 sweeps of Stoneham. Boys' tennis, celebrating Senior Day at home, moved to 8–9. Girls' tennis improved to 5–11 on the road. Boys' volleyball closed out the stretch by sweeping Essex North Shore 3–0 at home to clinch a spot in the state tournament, pushing their record to 10–8. The JV team took a win, too, shutting out Essex Agricultural 2-0.
The Middlesex League Open Invitational track meet took place Monday at Burlington High School, drawing roughly 1,100 athletes from across the region. Highlighting the girls' performances were freshman Elisa Dancus, who took first place in 400m hurdles with a time of 1:23.67, the 9th & 10th grade team of Dancus, DiVacri, Hiraldo, and Lisano who took first in the 4x400 relay (4:41.57), and 9th grader Hailey Coffey, who took second in javelin with 78'4". On the boys' side, sophomore Liam Rayne took 2nd in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:05.10, senior Michael Boldezar took 2nd in javelin with a distance of 127'6", and Burlington dominated the shot put with 9 of the top 14 places.
Burlington will host the varsity track league championship on Wednesday, May 20.
