Burlington basketball split at Arlington Tuesday while swim and track impressed in their openers; coaches see postseason potential early in the season.

Basketball Splits at Arlington as Boys Rally; Swim & Track Open Strong

It was a busy early-week stretch for Burlington athletics, highlighted by competitive basketball games and an encouraging start for the swim team.

On Monday, the swim team opened its season with a convincing 128–42 scrimmage win over Shawsheen Tech. Coaches noted many promising times close to sectional qualifiers and expressed confidence that multiple swimmers will make it into the post-season.

Tuesday night saw a split for Burlington basketball at Arlington. The girls’ team pushed the game into overtime before falling 46–36. Reilly led the Lady Devils with 10 points and four assists, while Marshall added seven points and four rebounds. Thomas chipped in seven points and five steals.

The boys responded to a slow first quarter with a strong finish, defeating Arlington 58–51. Justin Gray scored 20 points and Matty Gray added 18 as the Gray brothers combined for 38 points. The boys' JV team won their game, too, with a score of 62-51. Both basketball teams move to 1–1 with Friday games against Melrose to look forward to.

The indoor track & field teams opened the season with wins over Watertown. The boys dominated the action 95-5 with several states-qualifying performances. Girls came through with a 68-32 win. Next up: Melrose next Monday.
