Burlington DevilBotz Robotics Team to Host STEM Spectacular

Burlington High School's Robotics team, known as the DevilBotz, is preparing for another busy season.

Each year, the DevilBotz join hundreds of teams in the region, across the country, and around the world in competing in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics robotics competition.

A new theme and related challenge are presented every January, and teams work for months to build and test a robot that can earn the maximum number of points, outperforming the other robots at regional qualifying tournaments. Qualifying teams will earn a spot at the district championship and, ultimately "Worlds," the final competition of the season for the best-performing robots.

Like sports teams and music groups do through their Boosters, the Robotics team fundraises to support their activities throughout the season. These efforts take many forms, from fundraising evenings at local restaurants to, one time a few years ago, a jewelry raffle. This year, the team is trying something new – and they think you're going to like it.

On November 22, from 10:00-3:00, join the DevilBotz for their STEM Spectacular. During this family-friendly day, the community is invited to celebrate everything Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, including the robots the DevilBotz team is known for. Students on the team will spotlight the robots the team has created in the past and the ones they're practicing with as they prepare for the season's official kickoff. They'll also be joined by local companies and professional societies, including MIT's Lincoln Lab, the Society for Women Engineers, and even Dave & Buster's, who will share their work and potential future educational and job opportunities.

Thanks to local sponsors, the competition will also feature raffles and door prizes that will spark kids' science minds.

Attendees can see last year's competition bot, Purple, in action, operate the team's miniature practice robots, and even take a photo with Baxter, the larger-than-life interactive robot.

The day promises fun for all ages. Mark your calendars today for the STEM Spectacular, November 22 from 10:00 to 3:00 at Burlington High School.
