Weekly Buzz | We Now Have a Local Government Section!

Plus a look at the week ahead in Burlington

Hello, there!

One big reason for starting the Buzz was so I could collate in one place all the Facebook posts I’d created about the town’s inner workings. So, I’ve created a separate section where I’ll be slowly editing and uploading those posts. Don’t worry, you won’t get separate emails about them, but I’ll link them here in case you want to read!

Up first: Why is Burlington a Town, and not a City?

Why is Burlington a Town?
I used to think a municipality’s population and whether or not it had a mayor determined town versus city status. While researching local government, I learned I was mostly wrong. So, here’s the scoop. The standard legislative body for municipalities in MA is Town Meet…

This Week in Burlington

This is a busy week in B-town. There’s a Burlington birthday celebration on Thursday. Shawsheen Tech Superintendent interviews are happening on Wednesday and Thursday. And, of course, the election is coming up. Below are some things to look forward to. Comment below if there’s anything I missed!

Monday 2/28 – Happy Birthday, Burlington!

Tuesday 3/1

Wednesday 3/2

Thursday 3/3

  • 6:15 – Shawsheen School Committee meets to interview candidate Anthony McIntosh for the Superintendent-Director position. (Watch via YouTube)
  • 7:00 – Planning Board regular meeting. The agenda and details aren’t yet posted for this meeting, but should be up by Tuesday.
  • 7:00 – Happy Birthday, Burlington! Rob Costa speaks about our “Rich past, bright future” at the Historical Society, in the Human Resources Building at 61 Center Street.

Friday 3/4

  • 12:00 – Sculpture Park Committee will meet with some updates, including how the call to artists is going. (Are you an artist or do you know one? You should get in touch!)

Other things to keep an eye out for

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Register to vote. You only have a couple of weeks and it’s so ridiculously fast and easy. Just get it out of the way!

There are a number of candidate events this week and next. I don’t know about every single one, so I won’t be posting about them here, but take a look at the ballot and look up the candidates’ websites so you can attend the events and get to know the platforms of your candidates. (Actually, let me get on making a list of those for you.)

The candidate guide questionnaires will be going out this week, too, so if you’re a candidate keep an eye out for those.

Finally, and please forgive me for being the messenger on this one – Daylight Savings is coming up on 3/13. That’s not this week, but it’s coming, and I always forget it exists so I thought I’d be nice and give you a reminder.

Don’t forget to wish Burlington a happy birthday as you pass through the center tomorrow. More soon!
