Weekend Buzz | Burlington Youth Field Hockey Finishes Up Inaugural Middle School Season

Plus, spring clinic to welcome new players

Happy Saturday, Burlington!

Before we start, I want to wish the best of luck to our FIRST LEGO League robotics team at today’s the state championship. I’ll be back next week with a longer feature about them!

Now, allow me to introduce you to the Burlington Youth Field Hockey Association middle school travel team, who just completed their first (very successful!) season.

The BYFHA started in 2018, when the Burlington Recreation Department held its first field hockey clinic. Originally an opportunity to introduce field hockey to kids who’d had limited or no exposure, these clinics succeeded in raising interest an energy for the sport.

The organization is now an officially recognized 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization with 20 players. Many team members had never played or were new to the sport, and they came together quickly to learn how to play as a cohesive team. This inaugural travel team played nearby towns like Melrose and Chelmsford, and they finished with an impressive 3-1-2 record on the season!

Burlington Youth Field Hockey plans to continue offering this opportunity to girls in grades 6-8, as well as clinics through the Recreation Department. The next beginners’ clinic for grades 2-8 will be March 19 for an hour from either 1-2 or 2-3 (or both!). The cost is only $10, and it looks like spaces are still available, so if you know a kiddo that might be interested, get in there!

BYFHA hopes the interest in their sport keeps growing and we continue to see strong performance and teamwork in our middle school team!

Thanks to Jamie Beane for the conversation!

Sports and Activities

In Varsity Basketball, Lady Devils fell to Stoneham last night 53-48 in a close matchup. Boys, on the other hand, won 86-71.

As I mentioned earlier, our FLL team is at States and will hopefully return with good news!

Hockey is on the calendar today, with Girls’ and Boys’ Varsity teams playing at Reading at 6:00 and 7:45. JV Boys play Woburn at home at 2:15.

The wrestling team is also at work today, competing at the Thomas Chickanis Memorial Tournament in Hudson Falls, NY.

Best of luck to everyone today!

I hope you’re enjoying the first half of your weekend!
