Kicks For Cancer

BHS Soccer players participated in the Kicks for Cancer event at Concord-Carlisle High School last weekend. CBS Boston reports the event has a 16-year history of bringing in funds to benefit Dana-Farber in memory of Lois Wells, mother of CCHS teacher Steve Wells, who died from ovarian cancer in 2007. This year, the life of Pete Nichol, a teacher in Concord who died from cancer earlier this year, was also honored at the event.

Residents from nearly two dozen neighboring towns came to participate in various sports activities as well as a 5k.

For our soccer players and coaches, this is always a special day filled with bittersweet memories.

Senior Captain James Burke sees this about not just the players or the sport, but about everyone who has been touched by cancer. “I think Kicks for Cancer is a great way to spread awareness through sport, and a great way to spread positivity because of how amazing the game really is,” Burke said. “I hope in the future there can be even more teams who join into the event to help the spread even more awareness and have it last an entire weekend.”

Senior Captain Connor Herrera agreed, saying, Kicks Against Cancer “was very special because although both teams were competing against each other, we all were fighting against something much bigger.”

Many participants wore shirts bearing the name of someone they knew who had battled cancer. According to Coach Andrew Deane, “The ability to recognize someone who has battled, lost their battle, or is battling cancer is very powerful…Seeing their battle celebrated or name memorialized is important for these young players.”

Thanks to the players, coaches, and anyone who donated or participated in this event for raising money and awareness about something that, in some way or another, affects us all.

Yesterday’s Scores

• Our golfers fell to Winchester yesterday by a score of 52-19.
• JV girls tied a tough Wilmington team 1-1 yesterday; congrats to Ava Cicolini for her Player of the Match title. It looks like Varsity also tied 1-1, but I’m not positive on that one.
• Our Varsity Football team lost to Watertown 42-7 last night.
• I’ll check back for the rest of the scores tomorrow.

Today’s Schedule

• Volleyball day today, with JVA and JVB playing at 10 and Varsity at 11:30 at home against Central Catholic.
• Freshman boys are set to play football at Watertown at 11:00.
