Short-notice decision shocks many long-time workers

Daily Buzz | Got a Yes or No CPA Sign on Your Lawn? You Might Not Be Allowed to Be a Poll Worker

Good Morning, Burlington!

I hope you went to bed a little early last night to prepare for this crazy week.

Not much has changed since yesterday, and there is virtually nothing on the calendar today. Also, Baby Buzz woke up at 4:58 and is currently sitting on my lap trying to get back to sleep as I type on my phone with my left thumb.

But I did want to highlight a development that occurred late last week with respect to the election. Note that I’m hoping to speak to our Town Clerk today, so this information is not complete, but here is what I do know:

This year, residents who are displaying lawn signs will not be allowed to be poll workers at tomorrow’s election. I do not know if folks have been given the opportunity to remove their lawn signs and still work the polls, but this has been troubling to many poll workers and residents for a number of reasons:

  • Poll workers tend to be more politically active than the average resident.
  • The average voter wouldn’t even know the poll workers or where they live, much be influenced by their lawn signs while at the polls.

There are a number of rules and regulations around how the polls are to be run, from political party makeup to how many 16- and 17-year-olds can work them, but I wasn’t able to find any rule about signs other than that they can’t be displayed within 150 feet of a polling location.

From what I understand, the Town Clerk has some flexibility around the rules, but the question I keep hearing is, why now? Why this year, and why so close to the election?

I’m eager to hear more about this decision and will update you tomorrow.

Score Update

  • On Friday, our Girls’ Soccer season ended after a playoff loss.
  • Our swim team, which is combined with Woburn, had a great showing at sectionals, qualifying for state in 200 Free Relay, 50 Free, and 400 Free Relay.
  • Varsity Football took home a big 42-8 W against Medford in a non-playoff game.
  • Our Varsity Cheer team took second in League and is headed to regionals.

Today’s Schedule

There’s nothing on the official calendar for today, though I do find that during playoff season some events happen without being on the calendar.

That’s it for today. I’ll see you tomorrow!
