$500k Complete Streets Grant will support walkability in an area with heavy pedestrian traffic
Good Morning, Burlington!
Recently, our town was the recipient of a $500,000 grant from the state for the purpose of constructing sidewalks along Blanchard Road from South Bedford St. to Muller Rd. Anyone familiar with this area knows it’s not pedestrian-friendly at all, though there are plenty of reasons to want to walk: Observing the wealth of life in the marshes along the road, soaking in the endless skies from Mary Cummings Park, and more.
This project will have a fast turnaround for a municipal project: the construction must be complete by the end of 2024, and so the planning and permitting phases will be completed in 2023 giving a year to reach the project completion deadline.
This project is just one instance of the town prioritizing walkability and accessibility. The town and contracted design firm, Brovitz, held its first public forum to explore the community’s needs and desires with the Burlington 128 District rezoning project. They hope to spend the next several weeks getting to know the pain points and then work on rewriting the zoning for the area to allow more mixed-use and possibly residential areas in the underutilized space along Mall Road and Middlesex Turnpike.
