TownVote: Voters Weigh in on Electronic Sign in Burlington

After a week of voting in the latest TownVote poll, more than 80% of respondents say they approve of an electronic sign in Burlington. The sign, if approved, would be installed at the corner of Bedford and Cambridge Streets at the Town Common, a location where currently two wooden poles hold up physical banners that are manually changed out each time a new event is publicized.
This TownVote was made possible by Burlington Buzz's collaboration with civic engagement platform, VoteLight, which connects voters with their local government and allows them to weigh in on the issues that matter to them. There are five different account types on VoteLight, says co-founder and former Rowley, MA, government official, David Masher: Municipal, Elected Official, Group, Media, and Voter. After being authenticated, anyone with one of these accounts can create an Issue related to an important topic at the national, state, or local level, and anyone in the geographic region can weigh in with questions, opinions, and a response to the poll.
While the sample size is small with only 25 votes, the votes, opinions, and questions recorded thus far demonstrate a good starting point for enhanced civic engagement in Burlington. This platform and the participation of Burlington residents sets up a framework for how voters can become more involved and government officials can solicit and use input from those they represent to ensure their decisions reflect the will of the people.
