What’s happening behind the scenes in Burlington? The Civic Expo offers a closer look.

On a Wednesday evening in January, Burlington residents will have the chance to step behind the scenes of town life — without attending a meeting, sitting through a presentation, or needing to know where to start.

The annual Civic Expo returns on Wednesday, January 14, bringing together town departments, boards, commissions, schools, and community nonprofits in a single, drop-in event designed to answer a simple question many residents have: How does the town actually work?

Now in its third year, the Civic Expo has become a low-pressure way for residents to explore the people, services, and decisions that shape daily life in Burlington. Instead of speeches or panels, the event is set up as an open house, with dozens of tables residents can visit at their own pace.

You don’t have to come with a specific agenda; you can wander, ask questions you’ve always had, or just see what’s out there.

A practical way to learn — with food and fun

The Civic Expo is intentionally informal. Attendees can expect free food, live entertainment, kids’ activities, and door prizes, alongside opportunities to talk directly with the people who run town services, oversee budgets, plan development, support schools, and provide help to residents.

This year’s layout is organized around real-life questions residents often ask, such as:

  • How does the town build a budget?
  • How does an idea become a bylaw?
  • How do building projects get approved?
  • How do I register to vote and participate in civic life?
  • How do I find help or services if I need them?

The goal of grouping organizations around these questions is to make local government processes and community resources feel more accessible — especially for people who may not usually attend municipal meetings or know where to look for information.

Something for first-timers and regulars alike

For residents who’ve attended before, there’s still plenty that’s new. Each year brings different projects, changing priorities, new programs, and new faces at town boards and organizations. This year’s event also includes expanded kids’ activities and live entertainment, making it easier for families to attend together.

And for those who’ve never been, the Civic Expo is designed as a starting point — not a commitment. While organizations will highlight opportunities to get involved, there's no need to join a committee or volunteer for anything. You can just come, enjoy yourself, and leave knowing more than you did when you walked in.

A community effort

The Civic Expo is free, open to all, and made possible through the participation of dozens of local organizations and the support of community partners. While the event highlights how town government functions, it also reflects the broader network of nonprofits, schools, and volunteer groups that support Burlington residents every day.

The event will take place at the Burlington High School cafeteria, which offers ample space, accessibility, and parking.

Residents are encouraged to RSVP in advance, though walk-ins are welcome. Get more information at the official event website.
