There are approximately 30 municipalities in the United States called Burlington. While we are partial to the one just a few miles northwest of Boston, sometimes it's fun to learn about other places with the same name.

Fall is back-to-school season, and that means back to high school sports, as well. Here's what some other Burlingtons' athletic programs are up to this fall.

Grayhounds are Multi-Sport Dominators

The Midwest's most famous Burlington – Burlington, IA – can boast some pretty solid athletics performance, with the swim team sitting at 23-7, the football team nearly undefeated at 5-1, and the volleyball team winning 4 of their last 5 matches and holding a 20-3 record on the season.

The single football so far was an uncharacteristically low-scoring 14-16 loss to the Washington Demons.

Fun Fact: There is also a West Burlington High School, serving the smaller 3,000-person community of – you guessed it! – West Burlington, which abuts Burlington proper (pop. ~25,000, comparable in size to our Burlington). Their mascot is the Falcon and their story is fascinating.

The Cougars are Undefeated in Football

The Burlington, CO, Cougars Volleyball team was on a roll, winning five in a row, until the Yuma Outlaws shut them out last Thursday. They've since won one more and now sit at 8-5 on the season. The football team, however, bested the outlaws to keep their perfect record. At 5-0, they'll next take on the Wray Eagles.

Unlike Burlington, Massachusetts, the Cougars' cross country and golf teams aren't active in the fall season. The golf team finished up their last season in January, which suggests it's more of a winter sport. There is no soccer team on their roster for the year!

Other fun facts

  • The Spartans of the Burlington School in Burlington, NC, only have a few sports on the calendar for this fall: boys' soccer, girls' tennis, cross country, and volleyball.
  • In addition to the usual suspects, Burlington, VT Seahorses (at least in 2024) have a bass fishing team.
